Gene Stovall is classically trained vocalist, abstract rapper, and improvisational vocal musician who writes and produces his original music by using acoustic guitars, loopers, synths, bass guitars, drum machines, and vintage microphones. Also know as STOVALIEN, Stovall is a sonic shapeshifter who merges genres, breaks expectations, and delivers performances that blur the lines between concert, jam session, and storytelling ritual. His music draws from a wide spectrum of influences from the worlds of RnB, Jazz, New Wave, Soul, Rock n Roll, Gospel, Grunge, and Hip-Hop. Stovall is known for his way of creating fusion from these genres of music into a sound that’s both deeply rooted and wildly original.
Originally from Pittsburgh and now based in Köln, Stovall built his sound from years of vocal discipline and underground innovation. His background as a well rounded singer gave him a command of harmony, phrasing, and vocal nuance, while his passion for Hip-Hop gave him the freedom to break structure and experiment with rhythm and form. The result is Stovall’s signature broken jukebox styled scat-rap beatbox hybrid that works because of his improvisational approach to rap that mixes vocal riffs, abstract flows, and stream-of-consciousness storytelling. It’s Jazz on adrenaline. It’s Hip-Hop on ADHD meds. It’s unlike anything else out there.
More than just a rapper or vocalist, Stovall approaches music as an experience. Whether on stage or in the studio, his performances feel spontaneous yet intentional, rooted in tradition but propelled by future-forward ideas. As an underground artist, Gene Stovall is earning attention for his originality, stage presence, and fearless fusion of styles. He’s performed across a variety of spaces from intimate venues to festival stages and has shared performance bills with artists like Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa, KRS-ONE, Nas, Rakim, Redman, Method Man, and Raekwon The Chef. Stovall is always bringing the same raw energy and vocal dexterity that’s become his trademark to every live performance. With each improvisational moment, he continues to push boundaries and carve out a lane that’s entirely his own
